Designing and Constructing a Nature-Inspired Eco-Friendly Play Haven
In a collaborative effort between our design team and the visionary principal of this primary school in Toowoomba, we embarked on an ambitious project to create a large natural play space that seamlessly incorporated the school's stunning existing trees. With a keen focus on promoting physical development, particularly balance and upper body strength, the design was carefully crafted to engage and challenge young minds.
Addressing a significant issue of flooding during heavy rains, our team collaborated closely with the principal to integrate a meandering creek bed into the landscape, guiding excess water towards a strategically placed rain garden. This eco-friendly solution not only mitigated flooding but also preserved valuable topsoil.
The play space boasts an array of features promoting cooperative play, including a custom climbing fort with a scramble net, tube slide, ladder, fireman’s pole, and deck leading to log steppers. Monkey bars, twisted monkey bars, deck platforms, and log and cypress plank balance beams add to the playground's adventurous appeal. Seating options, such as sandstone block seats, a log amphitheater, and a curved platform bench encircling the sandpit, cater to both spectators and active participants. To ensure inclusivity, a winding path with flush decks was designed for accessibility. Emphasising sustainability, our construction team utilised natural materials and preserved every existing tree on the site. The successful execution of the project reflects the exemplary collaboration between the client, design team, and construction crew, resulting in an exceptional and accessible play space that fosters adventure and learning for all.
